Australian Football Contract Negotiation

Chris Cross

Well, finally Chris Judd has made a decision regarding his future and will return home from Perth across to Victoria. The speculation ended late last week when Chris revealed he wanted to move back for family reasons.

As soon as he announced his decision, clubs began planning what they could bring to the table to convince the Eagles and lure Judd to their team.

Carlton had the first meeting with Essendon, Melbourne and the Magpies following them. [Carlton first stop on Judd tour] This is on top of Judd meeting with surgeons to repair his injured groin, which will keep him sidelined for about 4 months.

The Herald Sun did a great job at reviewing each Victorian team’s chance of signing Judd and I would like to build on this now.

Firstly, West Coast has not hinted at what they want for the trade, but they are lacking in the forward departments, so this may convince them. However, I am sure a high draft pick will also be needed.

Chris has indicated that playing home games at the MCG (the home of football) would be a strong selling point. [Pies have pulling power]

Carlton are favourites to sign him. They have a deep pool of financial resources, and a lot to offer in regards to players and picks. Number 1 is untouchable, as it’s reserved for Matthew Kreuzer, but picks 3 and 20 could come into play. They also have Josh Kennedy, a tall promising forward who is from WA. However, the Eagles may want their superstar froward Bredan Fevola. Carlton has offered Judd an AFL record $7.5 million over 5 years.

Essendon is a strong club that could lure Judd as they have freed up quite a bit of room in their salary cap this year with the retirement of James Hird. However, the lack of a coach and playing home games at Telstra Dome are major disadvantages. They have a fair bit to offer, with talented youngsters Paddy Ryder and Scott Gumbleton from WA. They also have pick 6.

Collingwood has a lot working in its favour. The team has world class facilities, high amount of resources and plays its games at the MCG. However, the team probably does not have a lot to trade and very low draft picks.

Finally, Melbourne. Chris grew up supporting Melbourne and they play at the MCG. They have pick 4 and are a big club. However, lack of trade bait may hinder them. Although, power forward Russell Robertson is out of contract and could be traded.

Cartlon is the bookies favourite to win his services, however I think Melbourne is a smokey. I guess time will tell.
