The Wash Up 19th-26th November

– David Beckham has been jetsetting around my great land this week, with his LA Galaxy going down to Sydney FC 5-3. One of the highest paid players in the world, Beckham has bizarrely spoken out that soccer players earn too much. [Beckham says youngsters earn too much cash] This may sound like the pot calling the kettle black, but he feels that all the younger players care about is money and not the pride of the nation. If anyone saw the despair on his face when England bowed out last week, you would agree.

– Keeping on England’s defeat last week, it is reported that it has cost England up to a billion pounds of lost revenue. This includes ad revenue, shirt sales and indirect sources such as pubs and clubs revenue. [English defeat could add up to £1bn loss]

– The NBL garners alot of criticism from the basketball world for not being of a higher quality like other foreign leagues. The league fails to attract high profiles names due to the low salary cap (around $800,000) it is forced to adhere to. Clubs have spoken out this week about adopting a similar scenario to that of the A-League, and having a marquee player at each club, with their salary falling out of the cap. [NBL clubs want rule change on salary cap] The figure that is needed to attract a big name is said to be more than the entire cap itself, but it would certainly raise the profile of the league.

– I will be doing an extensive wrap up of the AFL draft in the coming days.

– Apologies for the short/late Wash Up this week but I have been working at IMG in their Golf Sponsorship department. I will give an insight into my work when I have finished.

Chris– I’d be interested to see your thoughts on what you can/can’t blog about re: your experience working. In my experience, there’s a fine line between writing about what you know and writing about something you may have learned while at work, which for me, isn’t ok. I definitely struggle with what I can/can’t write about for fear that I’ll reveal too much info about something I’m involved with. You don’t have to post this comment but I just wondered what your experiences were with employers…do they know you blog about things relating to your job? If so, what has their reaction been?
