Summary of Princeton Sports Symposium

This past Friday, I was able to attend Princeton’s Sports Symposium. Some of the largest and most successful companies in the sports industry were in attendance. They included IMG, BDA, CAA, Blue Equity, Octagon and Momentum Worldwide.

The individuals on the sports management panel all expressed opinions and advice on how to go about breaking into this industry. All were adamant that you must bring value to wherever you work or intern. That is not a surprise to anyone, but they also mentioned it is important to have a certain skill set that you focus on, whether it be marketing, legal, or accounting. It is imperative that you can differentiate yourself from others. Also, starting directly in the agency industry is not always necessary. You never know what the future holds.

The last piece of information I would like to share is in regards to endorsements. When searching for endorsement opportunities, agents should focus about positioning and relating to the general public rather than looking for the most money. Contrary to what some many think, more is not always better. Top flight athletes are constantly turning down endorsement deals because their exclusivity to who and what they endorse can bring them more money in the long run.
