Taste of Sugar? Smell of Roses?

To many, this college football season is one for the ages. With all of the upsets and a virtual smörgåsbord at the top of the rankings, it is hard to disagree with those people. However, what I saw two days ago from 2 of the 5 BCS Bowls made me sick.

In both the Rose Bowl and the Nokia Sugar Bowl, we saw two incredible blowouts. Illinois and Hawaii were totally outclassed and outplayed. USC and Georgia flexed their big program muscle and dominated the game from the opening kickoff. The difference in the athletes and the speed of both USC and Georgia compared to their opponents was unbelievable. After watching yesterdays game it would be hard to convince me that USC or Georgia are not Championship caliber teams.

I understand that these BCS Bowls have their tradition and corporate sponsors to please, but I don’t understand why there isn’t more fuss regarding pinning the best teams in the nation against each other. I know this will never happen because the BCS Bowls all want that one dominate team to draw in the fans and TV ratings. It makes me ask this question to these Bowl committees: Would you rather a superior team win in a blowout, or two good teams play an exciting and competitive game?

I just wish there was more certainty in college football. Once again this season is going to end with people arguing, and for good reason, about who is really the best team in the country. On a side note, it was nice to see BCS snub, Missouri, run Arkansas off the field.

One reply on “Taste of Sugar? Smell of Roses?”

the bowls are a business and they care about the bottom line, and rightfully so.

i guess the rose could’ve had mizzou, kansas, or wvu in the game. the sugar’s hands were tied with hawaii.
