Scutaro Takes Pay Cut and Signs with BoSox

Marco Scutaro

Shortstop Marco Scutaro is coming off of a stellar season with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009. Scutaro has one goal in mind from here on out: Winning a World Series ring. Scutaro expressed his feelings when he said,

You get to a point where you just want to live the experience, just want to be in the World Series, just want to win the ring. I think this is the perfect team to do that.

Scutaro’s deal is for three years and here is how it will break down:

  • $1 million signing bonus
  • $5 million in 2010
  • $5 million in 2011
  • Third Year Options:
    • Team – $6 million
    • Scutaro – $3 million
    • Buy out – $1.5 million

Scutaro is a Class-A free agent which basically means that the Red Sox had to give up a first round draft choice to the Blue Jays. However, since former Red Sox pitcher Billy Wagner went to the Braves earlier in the week, the BoSox got their first round pick back seeing as Wagner was also a Class-A free agent.
