Third Annual Great Lakes Sports and Entertainment Law Academy Begins May 19

For the third consecutive year, law students from around the country looking for a career in sports or entertainment law will have the opportunity to experience hands-on, practical-lawyer training in their given industry at the annual Great Lakes Sports and Entertainment Law Academy (GLSELA).  Hosted on the campus of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in conjunction with Case Western Reserve University, this three-week intensive program will take place during the summer semester with classes running May 19-June 7.

For the first time, students enrolled at the 2014 GLSELA can elect to complete the academy entirely through distance learning courses.  In addition to attending the academy in-person in Cleveland, Ohio, students may choose to complete courses online via live, interactive sessions, or asynchronously through recorded sessions.  The course’s offsite field trips and special lectures will also be made available through the distance learning platform, making the academy’s law courses among the few throughout the country available entirely online.

Academy students choose between two concentration streams — Sports Law or Entertainment Law — with an option to take an additional elective course in the adjacent concentration.  Students learn through simulation-based exercises that focus on doctrine, drafting and negotiation for professional athletes and entertainers, venues and franchises.  After completion of the courses, students may also elect to participate in selective externships reserved for academy graduates.  GLSELA grads have externed with organizations such as the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers, SPIRE Institute, Vuguru Studios, and Greater Cleveland Film Commission.

In addition to the courses — Entertainment Law: Film and Television, Law of the Music Industry: The Artist’s Perspective, Representing the Professional Athlete and Negotiation Strategies in Sports Management — students gain insight from an impressive collection of guest speakers from the sports and entertainment fields.  Guest speakers at the 2013 GLSELA included Jim Tressel, former Ohio State University football coach; Honorable Dan A. Polster, United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio; Rick Chryst, Senior VP, Dietz Trott Sports & Entertainment Management; Jason Hillman, General Counsel, Cleveland Cavaliers, Jeff Orloff, COO, SPIRE Institute; John Parry, Athletic Director, Cleveland State University; and Jeff Pacini, VP, Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.

The application deadline for the Academy is May 1.  For more information, visit the website here.
