The 6-foot-6, 175-pound Barton played collegiately at the University of Memphis, where he won the Conference USA Player of the Year award as a sophomore. He decided to forgo his final two years of eligibility and enter the 2012 NBA Draft, where he was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers 40th overall. He was traded in February of 2015 to the Denver Nuggets, with whom he re-signed in August 2015.

He is coming off a year in which he averaged 14.4 PPG, 2.5 APG, and 5.8 RPG, which gained some attention for potential Sixth Man of the Year consideration. During All-Star Weekend in Toronto, Barton competed in the slam dunk contest where he showcased his high-flying ability.

He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2017-18 NBA Season.
