NBPA General Counsel Gary Kohlman To Retire

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) announced yesterday that its General Counsel, Gary Kohlman, will retire at the end of the month.

Kohlman was with the NBPA for the last four years, in which he successfully led the Association’s legal team in collective bargaining negotiations. He plans to return to Washington, D.C., where he previously worked as a public defender for the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia.

Kohlman’s ties to the NBPA began when he and Michele Roberts, the current executive director of the NBPA, worked together in the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia and then as partners in a private firm. Back in DC, he serves as an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University. He has more than 30 years of experience in criminal defense work and 25 years of experience in white collar criminal law.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Michele and the many consummate professionals that comprise the NBPA,” said Kohlman. “I believe we have made great strides in the last few years with the CBA and, together with all of the PA’s other recent accomplishments, I can comfortably return to my family home in Washington, D.C.”
