USWNT World Cup Victory Sparks New Opportunities For NWSL

After an early morning parade in New York City, the United States Women’s National Team flew to Los Angeles yesterday afternoon to celebrate in the ESPY festivities. After a dominating World Cup performance, they took home the ESPY for “Best Team”. Alex Morgan won an ESPY for “Best Female Athlete”.

This World Cup victory has created a national buzz for the USWNT. According to Fanatics, the USWNT is the top-selling US Soccer National Team jersey (men’s or women’s) of all-time. ESPN and the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League) agreed to a deal that will televise 14 matches during the 2019 season which includes 8 matches on ESPNEWS, and the remaining six will air on ESPN2. 

After agreeing to a multi-year partnership, Budweiser has become one of the biggest sponsors of the NWSL, as the first official beer sponsor of the NWSL. The partnership includes brand naming rights to the playoffs, championship, MVP Trophy, and the newly created “Most Valuable Supporter” award for the league’s biggest fan. In the offseason, NWSL players will have the opportunity to learn from Budweiser executives about the business side of sports. 

The NWSL kicked off their inaugural season in 2013. The league consists of 9 teams which includes the Chicago Red Stars, Houston Dash, North Carolina Courage, Orlando Pride, Portland Thorns FC, Reign FC, Sky Blue FC, Utah Royals FC and Washington Spirit. 

USWNT stars such as Julie Ertz, Rose Lavelle, Alex Morganand Megan Rapinoe star for the Chicago Red Stars, Washington Spirit, Orlando Pride and Reign FC, respectively.
