Agent Spotlights Interview With The Agent Sports Agents Sports Business

Catching Up With Leigh Steinberg

Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to catch up with my longtime mentor, super-agent and the “Real Life Jerry Maguire”, Leigh Steinberg.

It was the first time in a long time that he had nothing to do on a Sunday after a busy yet extremely exciting NFL season for his firm. From attending games to support his clients, to conducting Agent Academy’s, recruiting potential clients, hosting his 32nd annual Super Bowl Party in Atlanta and attending the NFL Honors ceremony to support his client and NFL MVP, Patrick Mahomes, Leigh finally got to have a Sunday “off.”

Below are several topics that Leigh and I spoke about regarding future events and exciting opportunities that Steinberg Sports & Entertainment has coming up:

Agent Academy

Leigh, CEO of Steinberg Sports & Entertainment, and his partner Chris Cabott, recently named the President of SSE, continue to strive “to mentor the next generation” through The Leigh Steinberg Agent Academy.

Upcoming Agent Academy’s:

March 1, 2019 – Indianapolis, IN

July 20, 2019 – Washington DC

Leigh and Chris emphasize practical skills that aspiring sports agents do not learn in business school or law school. Attendees get the opportunity to engage in a series of simulations that include negotiation, recruiting, damage control and branding exercises.

Whether you are an aspiring sports agent or wish to make the transition into the sports industry, this academy is for you!

From personal experience, being an attendee of three past Agent Academy’s, the knowledge that Leigh and Chris bestowed on me and the opportunity to engage in several real-life simulations was invaluable to me.

Sports Career Conferences

If you studied sports management or are a current sports business professional and want to accelerate your career, the Leigh Steinberg Sports Career Conference is for you!

The Sports Career Conference gives attendees the opportunity to learn from and network with experienced professionals in all realms of the sports industry including sports marketing, sports technology, sports media, TV & film and professional sports teams.

“If we can train a new generation of ethical, principled and especially talented young people in the field of sports that have been trained with unique skills that will help them succeed, then we will have left the world of sports better off”, says Leigh.

Upcoming Sports Career Conferences:

March 23, 2019 – Dallas, TX

April 13, 2019 – San Francisco, CA

September 14, 2019 – Chicago, IL

October 13, 2019 – New York, NY

November 17, 2019 – Los Angeles, CA

2019 NFL Draft Class

SSE has signed 3 great young men with high character and extreme athletic ability to their 2019 NFL Draft Class: David Sills, Marvell Tell and Darrell Henderson. All three players have received NFL Combine invitations.

David Sills – The 6’3” WR from West Virginia is a very productive player who has mismatch size that will tremendously benefit an NFL organization. His size, hands and leaping ability makes him an immediate red-zone weapon.

Marvell Tell – A physical, disciplined and downhill safety from USC will attract the likes of many NFL GM’s due to his speed and high football IQ.

Darrell Henderson – The All-American running back from Memphis is one of the top running backs in this year’s draft class. Henderson’s combination of his elusiveness, pass protection, receiving ability and football IQ make him a potent potential backfield weapon for a future NFL organization.

Another New York Times Best Seller?

Amidst his busy schedule, Leigh is in the early stages of writing another book. His last book, The Agent, was a New York Times Bestseller in 2014 and his most recent publication. Leigh’s next book will focus on parenting of youth athletes. It will discuss ways in which parents can raise their children with good values to learn the importance of character despite times of adversity.

Virtual Reality Project

Leigh is also involved with a virtual reality project that will allow users to place themselves as an NFL player in a NFL game simulation. Hypothetically, users could pretend to be Patrick Mahomes. The VR will simulate the experience of calling a play in the huddle, then approaching the line of scrimmage to then reading the defense to ultimately being able to react accordingly to make the right decision with the football.

Patrick Mahomes Offseason Buzz

After a historic and record breaking season, NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes will have a busy off season that includes the release of his own cereal, merchandise as well as the launch of his own charity.

Mahomes’ cereal “Mahomes Magic Crunch” will be in stores in Kansas City and Lubbock, TX by the start of training camp.

Although an NFL MVP is a tremendous honor, Patrick as well as the Steinberg Sports & Entertainment family are even more excited and proud to launch his own charity, “15 and the Mahomies.” It will benefit kids in Kansas City and in his hometown of Lubbock, TX. Future Baseball & Basketball Clients?

Leigh told me that he intends to move into recruiting basketball and baseball players to his firm as early as this upcoming spring. Jay Joshi (@JayJoshiSports), Director of Operations of SSE, is a certified basketball agent, who will be the integral agent in recruiting young basketball talent to the firm.
