Two weeks ago I came across a story that relates in a way to an article I wrote a few months back. This story has to do with DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment signing professional wrestler Joe “The Animal” Laurinaitis for marketing, appearances and entertainment work. Right off the bat, this may not sound like such an interesting story. But realize that Joe’s son is James Laurinaitis, a stud linebacker who is likely to be a top 10 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. It has raised some eyebrows throughout the business, with the thinking that DSE only signed Joe to eventually get to James. I have two points for those who may think this may be a little shady.
1.) Joe Laurinaitis (better known as “The Animal”) is one of the biggest WWE (or WWF for the old school) wrestlers to ever step into the ring. Still to this day, the Legion of Doom costumes can be seen at Raider games or even Halloween parties. Legion of Doom is the most popular Tag-Team ever in the WWE and to think that Joe Laurinaitis is finished or washed up is crazy. I for one believe that “The Animal” will have a fair amount of success now that he has representation on his behalf.
2.) Lets just say that DSE did have James in mind when they signed his father Joe. I think it is fair to say there have been a lot worse situations…like Reggie Bush and Lloyd Lake. If anything, it can be good with James in regards to having his father right there with him. DSE did not break any rules, can you really blame them for thinking outside the box?
As a side note, even though the chances of DSE signing James Laurinaitis has greatly increased with the signing of his father, we all know there is no such thing as a guarantee in this business.
