Derrick Morgan is one of the most explosive defensive ends to enter the NFL Draft. Here in Detroit, I feel that Morgan will make an instant impact on not only the defense, but the team as a whole.

At first glance, it would seem that my client’s statistics are strikingly lower than the others (and they are). However, you need to take into consideration the fact that my client only played two full seasons of football. Had he played four full seasons, the statistics would be comparable to the likes of Chris Long and Gaines Adams.
The average amount per year (guaranteed money) given to the second overall pick from 2007-2009 has been approximately $4.95 million. I am requesting $5 million per year for six years. Considering the fact that the total amount of first round contracts increased about 5% per year, my request of a 2% increase is definitely worth your while. Derrick Morgan is a proven run stopper and can provide immediate help for the Detroit Lions’ run defense. Derrick is not just a great football player, but he is the building block for the future!

I personallly think that this is a deal that you would settle on. Not a deal that you would make initially. The deal that your requesting is a fair deal for both sides, which is ultimately what both sides want. However, you want to WIN while the other side feels like they won in the negotiation. So i would probably ask for 6 years 38 million guaranteed with the total value tof the deal being worth around 67million. Guaranteed money is where its at nowadays.
Great point….thanks for the comment.
Dominic,
Your proposal is actually a fair one based upon Morgan being the 2nd overall pick. Especially when you take into account the guaranteed money that Tyson Jackson is receiving as the 3rd overall selection.
I do disagree with you though regarding Morgan’s production being comparable to Long’s and Adam’s had he played for 4 years. If you double his stats, they do not add up to either of theirs.
Again, this is being based upon the market for his selection as the number 2 pick, so the contract would be agreed upon.
Welcome to Detroit!
Great point as well AGW — it is important to have a “walk away point” when entering negotiations. You then want your first proposal to higher than the walk away point but not so high as to make your opponent angry. This will give you bargaining room as you can then make concessions and still obtain the deal that you want.
If it’s any consolation, the amount I’m requesting is just about 2.5 million less than what I asked for with Ndamukong Suh (a first overall pick).
Derrick will have to do something big to impress & jump over Gerald McCoy, Eric Berry and even Okung. they need OL to protect Stafford
Where do those statistics come from?
Two seasons? DM played three at Tech. He had nearly twice that many sacks last fall alone.
Are those projected stats for his first two NFL seasons?
Why would you not try and beat Tyson Jackson’s guaranteed money of 31 million over 5 years. Also he was the 3rd pick and you have Morgan as the #2 pick?
