Take Your Pick: HoopsHype Or DraftExpress

Money BasketballsSince I can first remember searching for basketball agent information, HoopsHype has always been my primary destination. For a long time, the site has held a monopoly in terms of aggregating basketball agent information in a fairly easy to read format. Monopolies are meant to be broken, though. DraftExpress has just released its Agent/Salary Tool database, which claims to be a comprehensive listing of virtually every player agent in the world along with the client salaries they are responsible for. The information available to our generation is remarkable. It will only expand as time goes on.

So which database is better? What does each site offer?

HoopsHype

  • Positives:
    • Ranks the top 100 agents by their clients’ salaries.
    • Ranks the top 15 agencies by their clients’ salaries.
    • Each agent’s page has a listing of players with their current and future salaries.
    • Notes how many all-stars each agent represents.
  • Negatives:
    • No alphabetized listing of agent names or agencies.
    • Only lists 15 agencies.
    • No key to explain color difference for player salaries.

DraftExpress

  • Positives:
    • Amazing sorting system. Can sort by agency and agent in alphabetical order, agent tier, team alphabetically, and player alphabetically.
    • Broken down into 5 categories: NBA Agents/Agencies, Non-NBA Agents/Agencies, Top Agents, Top Agencies, and Agency/Agent Affiliations.
    • Top agents are further broken down by total guaranteed salary, current year salary, and number of clients.
    • Many more agencies listed than at HoopsHype.
    • Easy key to explain color difference for player salaries.
  • Negatives:
    • There are so many options, you may no longer talk to your children.

Jonathan Givony does it again. DraftExpress has created a database that, if constantly updated, should become the premier source for basketball player/agent information.

Darren Heitner created Sports Agent Blog as a New Year's Resolution on December 31, 2005. Originally titled, "I Want To Be A Sports Agent," the website was founded with the intention of causing Heitner to learn more about the profession that he wanted to join, meet reputable individuals in the space and force himself to stay on top of the latest news and trends.

Heitner now runs Heitner Legal, P.L.L.C., which is a law firm with many practice areas, including sports law and contract law. Heitner has represented numerous athletes and sports agents as legal counsel. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Indiana University Bloomington from 2011-2014, where he created and taught a course titled, Sport Agency Management, which included subjects ranging from NCAA regulations to athlete agent certification and the rules governing the profession. Heitner serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he teaches a Sports Law class that includes case law surrounding athlete agents and the NCAA rules.

Hoopshype has not had a monopoly on gathering rumros in any way, at all. InsideHoops has the same rumors page format. But insidehoops started doing it in 2000, and by late 2000 sports illustrated wrote about us, praising our site. In 2001 yahoo internet life magazine recommended our rumors page, and the same year forbes named us ‘best of the web’ and mentioned our rumors page. hoopshype, meanwhile, didn’t even exist until 2002. As for popularity, a massive, global readership hits the insidehoops rumors page every day. That other site you mention has no ‘monopoly’ of any kind, at all

Well, aside from the obvious plug for insidehoops.com (go there now! Insidehoops.com!) I will say that I have been using Hoops Hype for everything basketball. DSraft Express does look pretty comprehensive though. I will definitely give it a try.

…i really wish something like this existed for the other sports though.

I think designing a site very similar to hoopshype, insidehoops or even draft express for the NFL is a great business idea and would be a great informational tool for sports fans, agents, and other sports businessmen. Maybe somebody should make this happen and make a lot of money. Just a thought.
