The Wash Up 12th-19th November

Some stories you may have missed last week…

– IMG has beefed up it’s company by acquiring Host Communications. [IMG to acquire Host Communications] Host provides marketing services for the NCAA and many Division 1 Universities. This is a massive acquisition for IMG, and bucks the trend of large agencies shifting to individual sports.

– In a bid to increase their medal tally in Beijing, the Canadian Olympic Committee has announced that medal winners will receive cash prizes. $20,000 for Gold, $15,000 for Silver and $10,000 for Bronze. [Cash for medals ‘not an incentive’ Canada’s Olympians insist] However, it is not an incentive for many athletes, despite many of the athletes making little income from their sport.

– Move over FedEx Cup, Dubai is attempting to become the finale of the golf season. The European Tour is planning a season-ending golf tournament worth $20 million, the richest on any tour. [European Tour’s richest event ever at $20 million] The prize pool will be split between prize money and incentives and is sure to attract a respectable field.

– Pele has spoken out about Beckham and the possibility that the US was misled about him. [Beckham deal dissed by Pele] Pele talks about how although he has delivered in the way of ticket sales and merchandise, his on-field presence has been minimal.

– To wrap up, some announcements in the baseball free agency market. World Series MVP Mike Lowell has re-signed with the Red Sox [Lowell agrees to $37.5 million, 3-year deal with Red Sox], Rivera has re-signed with the Yankees, and it looks like A-Rod will follow suit. The article about Pele dissing Beckham is so bad. Of course he hasn’t had much on-field impact…he’s been injured and hasn’t played!

“They announced him as a scorer of goals,” Pele told The Associated Press.

-Any soccer fan knows he wasn’t going to score a lot of goals, and I don’t even remember him being announced as such. At least people who probably couldn’t even name one MLS player before, can name one now. I’m surprised Pele is so quick to be critical in this situation.
