So the Houston Texans officially won…by losing A LOT!
The top 7 picks of the 2006 NFL Draft will be in this order:
1. Houston Texans (2-14)
2. New Orleans Saints (3-13)
3. Tennessee Titans (4-12)
4. New York Jets (4-12)
5. Green Bay Packers (4-12)
6. Oakland Raiders (4-12)
7. San Fransisco 49ers (4-12)…boy did they lose out by beating Houston this past week!
A lot has been mentioned about changing the current draft system to a system more like the NBA uses (a lottery). This would prevent teams from “playing to lose” to acquire amazing talent such as Reggie Bush, would keep fans from rooting against their losing teams, and would be good for the sport in general.
Check out NFL Draft Blitz for their article on the subject.
But whether you like the current system or not, whoever would have the first pick in the upcoming draft would have to pick Heisman Winner Reggie Bush, or trade that pick for another team’s entire draft (memories of what Mike Ditka did for Ricky Williams…the Saints are in great shape still with the 2nd overall pick…sarcasm).
Reggie Bush will be announcing his early leave from college in the next couple of days, and it should be very interesting to see who he chooses for representation and if his Sports Agent is able to get him the largest signing bonus in the history of the NFL. Alex Smith, the QB out of Utah that was drafted first overall by the San Fransisco 49ers received a 6-year contract for $49.5 million including a $24 million signing bonus. One would have to believe that Reggie Bush would be able to secure a larger signing bonus than Alex Smith, but Quarterbacks have notoriously gone 1st overall in the draft and have received larger signing bonuses than any other position in football. The agent of Reggie Bush will have a challenge proving that Reggie will be able to lead a team physically and emotionally like a team’s quarterback has been charged with in the past. Although you need only look to the Seattle Seahawks, where I definitely believe that Shaun Alexander is the capable leader of that team over a decent quarterback, Matt Hasselback.
Could Reggie maybe take the old California boy, Leigh Steinberg, as his agent, will he go with IMG, which has historically signed big time 1st rounders, or will he suprise us all and take someone off the radar? My pick is IMG. Time will tell.

[…] When I first posted on Reggie Bush’s decision to forgo his senior year of college to participate in the 2006 NFL Draft, it seemed that he would be a shoe-in to the Houston Texans with the first overall pick (See: The Reggie Bush Sweepstakes). I will admit when I am wrong, and I most definitely was incorrect in my assessment. The city of Houston is currently in misery over the decision to sign Mario Williams with the first overall pick, the rest of the country/world is in shock, and Reggie Bush is left wondering what went wrong. hi
great post
agents should be licensed like lawyers and rules or law enacted to control their behavior with regard to college players
