You may not after reading these facts about player salaries. btw, MLS stands for Major League Soccer, America’s attempt to create a professional soccer league in the U.S. Looking at salaries alone, it seems that the league is has not reached nearly enough popularity so far, and needs a boost before players like Freddy Adu go overseas.
The highest paid player is Juan Francisco Palencia, who has a contract worth $1.36 million including all bonuses [Top 10 MLS Player Salaries]. If an agent takes 5% of that figure, that comes out to $68,000, which is nothing to scoff at. But then again, that is for the highest paid player in the entire league. Move down only to the 10th highest paid player in the league, and you are looking at Carlos Ruiz, who is gauranteed to $360,000. a 5% commission on that is a mere $18,000. That figure may not convince you to enter the profession as an agent for the MLS.
Let’s compare these numbers to some of the other professional leagues in the United States.
MLB:
Highest paid player = Alex Rodriguez – 2006 Salary: $25,680,727 – 5% Commission: $1,284,036
10th highest paid player = Andy Pettitte – 2006 Salary: $16,428,416 – 5% Commission: $821,420
NBA:
Highest paid player = Shaquille O’Neal – 2005/06 Salary: $20 million – 4% Commission (capped): $800,000
10th highest paid player = Michael Finley – 2005/06 Salary: $15,937,500 – 4% Commission (capped): $637,500
I could not find good figures for the NFL or the NHL (if you can, please add as a comment), but looking at the NBA and MLB alone, it seems that Sports Agents may shy away from getting involved in American soccer (unless you find a superstar who can get the big bucks overseas). The only positive is that there is probably a lot less competition among agents for clients in the field of soccer.

I would like to be a soccer agent. I do think soccer is a market that is about to open up.
Soccer in America is as you said, growing in popularity, as the number of youth kids around America playing soccer has doubled over the past 10-14 years since the United States hosted the World Cup in 1994. With the initiation of the MLS and other pro and semi-pro leagues in the US soccer is becoming accepted and played by a lot of Americans. David Beckham’s came into the league only a year ago and look at his salary and all the hype he has receieved. If Beckham came into the league ten years ago half the people in the US still would not know who he is.
I agree that soccer players salaries in the MLS are nothing compared to the salaries players in the English Premiere League or the German Bundesliga, but as the MLS attracts those foreign players like it is starting to do now (Beckham, Blanco on the Chicago Fire, Juan Pable-Angel and Youri Djorkaeff for the NY Redbulls), the salaries and popularity of those playing soccer in America will rise.
I agree. With the number of viewers growing as well as players, soccer is growing tremendously in popularity. It is a growing field but the money is not to be made in the salaries but in the endorsements. I am not sure but do agents get a percentage of the big endorsement deals as well?
Imagine the amount of money an agent would make off of a Beckham endorsement deal!
The industry standard hovers around 20% on endorsements. Some agencies charge more, a few charge less.
