The U.S. News & World Report and BusinessWeek have long heralded the University of Southern California’s business school as one of the top 30 in the nation: the Marshall School of Business. In October of 2005, the school announced that it would create the Sports Business Institute as the nation’s first all-encompassing sports business center.
Its first event was the Sports & Events Marketing Experience (SEME) West, which was held on January 13-14, 2006. The Sports Business Institute plans on making the event an annual occurrance. The school has also started The Commissioners’ Series, which will hold MLB Commissioner Bud Selig on November 9th and NASCAR Chairman Brian France on February 22, 2007.
The program is still very new, but has strength in its location and founders. David M. Carter is the Executive Director, and the board of advisors includes the President of Fox Sports, Executive Editor of Yahoo Sports, and even the founder of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center (which I discussed in a post this past Friday).
