The 2012 competition had 40 teams from 28 different top law schools across the nation.

What: Third Annual National Sports Law Negotiation Competition & Sports Law Conference 2013

Where: Thomas Jefferson School of Law (San Diego)

When: Sept. 20-22, 2013

The Sports Law Conference will take place on September 20.  The Competition will go from September 21 through September 22, with the preliminary rounds on the 21st and the Championship Final Round on the 22nd.

Sports Law Conference Schedule

  • Session 1: 10:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. This session will provide an update regarding head injuries with the following perspectives presented: (1) Professional (a lawyer handling litigation in the area will participate); (2) Collegiate (Professor Rod Smith‘s, presentation will be based on the article that he is publishing with Pepperdine Law School); and (3) Interscholastic (a lawyer high school coach who writes in this area participating).
  • Lunch and Keynote Speech: 12:00-1:15 p.m (Award Presentation, Excellence in Sports)
  • Session 2: 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. A white paper from the Center for Sports Law & Policy regarding starting women’s football as a solution to the Title IX participation problem.  Professor Rod Smith will moderate.
Cost to attend the conference: $55 (Guests); $35 (Thomas Jefferson School of Law Faculty, Staff, Alumni & San Diego County Bar Association Members); $25 (Law Students).  Register here.

Darren Heitner created Sports Agent Blog as a New Year's Resolution on December 31, 2005. Originally titled, "I Want To Be A Sports Agent," the website was founded with the intention of causing Heitner to learn more about the profession that he wanted to join, meet reputable individuals in the space and force himself to stay on top of the latest news and trends.

Heitner now runs Heitner Legal, P.L.L.C., which is a law firm with many practice areas, including sports law and contract law. Heitner has represented numerous athletes and sports agents as legal counsel. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Indiana University Bloomington from 2011-2014, where he created and taught a course titled, Sport Agency Management, which included subjects ranging from NCAA regulations to athlete agent certification and the rules governing the profession. Heitner serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he teaches a Sports Law class that includes case law surrounding athlete agents and the NCAA rules.
