On Wednesday, I shared a final project submitted by students in my Sport Agency Management class that I teach at Indiana University Bloomington. That group focused on how they would act if they were the representatives for Kentucky Wildcats forward Julius Randle.
Another finished project that I received came from a group of students who called themselves “Group 1” (perhaps because they were the first group to be put together). They chose Kansas Jayhawks forward Andrew Wiggins as their client. Again, it is important to note that these projects are all based on hypothetical situations — Wiggins has never heard of any of my students (I assume) and there is no clear indication that Wiggins plans on leaving Kansas after his freshman year.
The following is the email I received describing the completed project and below are the embedded brochures, with a simple yet interesting brochure design.
Attached are Group 1’s team and brand brochures for our client, Andrew Wiggins. In deciding how to make our “best pitch,” we realized that the very best pitch we could make would come in the form of an oral presentation. With that in mind, we constructed our documents to set the stage for those in-person meetings. Each brochure is comprised of a cover letter and an informational “one sheet.” One-sheets are something I worked on a lot during my internship at [sports agency name redacted] last summer, and we thought they would work very well for this project.For the team brochure, we addressed our cover letter to the Milwaukee Bucks, as they currently have the worst record in the NBA and likely the #1 pick in the draft. We dated the letters in June because agents who contact teams on behalf of amateur players jeopardize that player’s NCAA eligibility. We wanted to be sure to send the letters at a time when Wiggins would have already declared for the draft.
For the brand brochure, we addressed our cover letter to Nike. Seeing as how Wiggins has received a lot of comparisons to LeBron, we thought it would be best to approach the company that LeBron endorses.We hope you will enjoy reviewing our project. We definitely had a good time working on it.Additionally, I wanted to personally let you know how much I enjoyed this course. I have known throughout college that I wanted to go into talent representation, and this is the first class I’ve taken at IU that has given me tangible and specific lessons for how to explore and succeed in that field. I look forward to staying in touch as I look for full-time positions for next year, and thank you again for all your help.
