Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez has signed with MLBPA agent Scott Boras, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reported via Twitter. He was previously signed with the ACES group.
Gonzalez will join a host of other high-profile Nationals players with the Boras corporation such as Max Scherzer, Bryce Harper, and Danny Espinosa.
While the 29-year-old lefty has now surpassed six years of service, he won’t be hitting free agency any time soon. Gonzalez has 1 guaranteed season left for $12MM on the extension he signed shortly after signing with the Nationals. The team holds a $12MM option ($500K buyout) for 2017, and there is a vesting option in 2018 (also at $12MM). That contract, negotiated by his former reps, set a new high water mark for first-time arbitration-eligible pitchers.
Scott Boras is regarded as one of the top MLB agents in the game today. He is the founder, owner and president of the Boras Corporation, a sports agency based in Newport Beach, California that represents roughly 175 professional baseball clients. Boras has brokered many record-setting contracts since 1982. In 2013, Forbes magazine named Boras the “Most Powerful Sports Agent in the World.”
