Cincinnati Reds catcher Brayan Pena has signed with Melvin Roman of MDR Sports Management. The free agent to be is leaving Kinzer Management Group as he prepares to negotiate a new contract.
The 33 year old Cuban has enjoyed his best days in the major leagues playing with the Reds since signing with the team in 2014 on a 2 yr/ $2,275,000 contract. In 2015 he hit .273 in 108 games for the disappointing Reds; that set a career best for him in a season in which he played at least 80 games.
It is up in the air if the Reds will bring back Pena or not. The switch-hitter projects as a backup catcher who offers a little versatility with his ability to play first base. He should earn a contract similar to the one he signed in 2014.
