Davis Bertans’ Agent: ‘We’re Playing The Cards That We Were Dealt’

NBA players are on the clock to decide whether or not they will participate in the conclusion of the NBA season. Many are currently discussing with their agents the pros and cons of traveling to Orlando, FL and being part of the “bubble” in Walt Disney World. It should come down to a personalized decision that must be weighed on a case-by-case basis based on specific circumstances.

Take for instance Davis Bertans who has made the difficult decision to sit out from further participation in 2020. He came to that conclusion after thorough talks with his agent Arturs Kalnitis.

“To be completely honest, Davis was prepared to play and then he made a last-minute decision to sit out,” Kalnitis told HoopsHype. “We’re playing the cards that we were dealt. When the NBA announced that players who sit out wouldn’t face consequences and would just lose 1 percent of their salary for each game missed, we sat down to discuss this. Davis is about to sign the biggest deal of his life, so he would be taking a big risk by playing. It wasn’t a tough decision, to be honest. If the Wizards were in the fifth or sixth seed (or maybe even the eighth seed), it would be completely different. Davis is a competitor. But in this situation, he decided to sit out.”

Apparently, it was not a tough decision for Davis, who has much more to lose by playing and potentially suffering an injury (even though he has an insurance policy that should cover him in such an instance) or performing below his perceived current market value based on his prior impact. Furthermore, it is not as though Davis is selling our his team based on their unlikely expectation for success (at least according to his agent).

Expect more players who are close to signing a big deal to announce that the risk of playing out the rest of the season is simply not worth the remaining payment due on their current contracts. Coronavirus may be used as a convenient excuse for some to sit out.
