AFL Agents looking for the next big thing in AFL need not look just in Australia anymore. There is a trend towards international players in the AFL. Finding the best players for the game is very important, this is something that is enjoyed by millions of people, that is why it is highly essential. People shop afl jerseys and kits to show support for their teams, so they hope that the people in charge make the right choices when recruiting players.
This trend of internationals playing Aussie Rules began with Jim Stynes being recruited by Melbourne in 1987. Jim didn’t start playing the game until he was 18, and was drafted from Ireland where he played Gaelic Football.
Gaelic football has many similarities to Australian Football, and AFL clubs have picked up on this. Brisbane has Colm Begley, Sydney has Premiership Player Tadhg Kennelly and Collingwood has rookie Martin Clarke. Now a lot of interest is surrounding a superstar of Gaelic Football, Eoin Murphy.
Naturally, the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is very protective of their stars. However, not enough to pay them. Gaelic Football is an amateur status sport in Ireland, and the average salary for an AFL Player is $200,000 (4 times the national average), so which would you choose?
The GAA is powerless to stop this exodus unless they introduce payment. [Let the Gaelic Football Raids Commence]
The International Rules Series between Australia and Ireland is often hindered by violence, yet AFL clubs eagerly scout the talent to pluck them out of Ireland and enlist them.
Another reason why clubs continue to hunt Ireland for prospects are the salary cap concessions. Clubs can instantly rookie-list the players, therefore avoiding the draft. Also, clubs can have 2 international players on their list that do not fall under the salary cap.
So when considering being an AFL Agent, think outside the box, and take a look at Gaelic Football for the next superstar.
