NRL in trouble

One of the biggest issues facing the NRL is the defection of players to Rugby Union. The latest player to defect is Timana Tahu, who has agreed to join the NSW Waratahs from Parramatta at the end of the season.

There are two mains reasons why a player would switch from League to Union. Firstly, the chance to be a ‘Wallaby’, by representing their country at such an elite level. This is more highly regarded than representing your country in League.

The second and more important reason is money. Rugby Union has very deep pockets, and can therefore offer substantially more money to its players.

Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart has suggested that the NRL adopt a similar approach to A-League and introduce a marquee player exemption, allowing one player’s wages to not be counted as part of the salary cap. [NRL must act to prevent exodus]

Most of the clubs have reacted favourably to this rule, however NRL boss David Gallop has rejected the proposal claiming that League is in a healthy position. [Gallop slams marquee door]

I think that the marquee policy is a great idea in any sport. If League were to introduce it, we may see players returning back from Union. Also, it frees up more money in thier salary cap, allowing them to keep exisiting players. A ceiling could also be placed on the amount if the League was concerned about escalating player wages.
