Dissecting Jerry Maguire’s Mission Statement – Part 5

This is the last breakdown for the entire week. I hope that you have enjoyed my breakdown of Jerry Maguire’s Mission Statement. I had a great time reading it in its entirety and loved sharing with you all some of my thoughts. If you would like to skip this segment and just read the whole document, you may do so by clicking here. If you missed Part 4, you can catch it here. Here are my bullet points from Part 5:

  • “I am wondering what that exact moment is when we truly, truly love our jobs. Is it during the day, or at the end of the day, or is it years later looking back on all we accomplished? I think perhaps truly loving something is the ability to love it at that moment.”
    • No commentary needed.
  • “Let us work less hard to sign the clients that we know won’t matter in the long run, and work twice as hard to keep the ones who will.”
    • Do a good job with the clients that you have and they will do anything in the world for you.
  • “Let us start a revolution. Let us start a revolution that is not just about basketball shoes, or official licensed merchandise. I am prepared to die for something. I am prepared to live for our cause. The cause is caring about each other. The secret to this job is personal relationships.”
    • This is what we are trying to do here. Nothing short of a revolution.

By Darren Heitner

Darren Heitner created Sports Agent Blog as a New Year's Resolution on December 31, 2005. Originally titled, "I Want To Be A Sports Agent," the website was founded with the intention of causing Heitner to learn more about the profession that he wanted to join, meet reputable individuals in the space and force himself to stay on top of the latest news and trends.

Heitner now runs Heitner Legal, P.L.L.C., which is a law firm with many practice areas, including sports law and contract law. Heitner has represented numerous athletes and sports agents as legal counsel. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Indiana University Bloomington from 2011-2014, where he created and taught a course titled, Sport Agency Management, which included subjects ranging from NCAA regulations to athlete agent certification and the rules governing the profession. Heitner serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he teaches a Sports Law class that includes case law surrounding athlete agents and the NCAA rules.
