Review of Schutt Sports ION4D

Sponsored Post:

Schutt Sports

Let me introduce to all of you sports fanatics a new football helmet that totally changes the look and feel of any helmet you have ever seen. Brought to you by Schutt Sports, the ION 4D has already been adopted by over 50 elite professional and college programs including the New York Giants, Auburn University, and Penn State University.

So what is this ION 4D all about, and how is it better than football helmets that are being used by a majority of players? Most importantly, the faceguard is actually a part of the helmet, and not a separate attached piece. Shock absorbing “Energy Wedges” make the ION4D faceguard much stronger than rival football helmet faceguards. On top of that, this faceguard gives you more vision on the field than your ordinary helmet.

But if you thought that a revolutionary faceguard was the only benefit of wearing an ION 4D, then you were very wrong. Schutt Sports introduces a new technology, the SKYDEX2 (TM), which is the most advanced cushioning system for current helmets, outperforming traditional foam in every aspect of hemet performance. No more worrying about mold and mildew creeping up near your forehead, the SKYDEX2(TM) technology is not affected by outside temperature. Better protection, better fit, and no weird germs crawling on the top of your head…that’s what Schutt Sports and SKYDEX2(TM) promise you when you purchase a helmet.

So wait no longer. If you are a football player, start lobbying your coaches to order some ION 4D helmets for your team. If you are a coach, wait no longer. Call up Schutt Sports or visit them online, and start lifting your players’ performances by adding the most comfortable and protective helmet in the game.

this helmet sucks i wore one for bout 3 weeks and the dang thing broke rite in 2 leavin me blind and now i only got one eye this is a no brainer dont buy this thing i hate it and u will too

Has anyone found a clear visor that fits this helmet? Penn State players seem to have Nike Visors on theirs however I bought the Nike Visor and it does not fit my sons helmet?

According to me studies in my indoor football stadium, this new ion helmet is scientifically prooven to prevent concusions and death. I highly prefer this helmet to any football player.

naw man, the most comfortable and most protecting helmat is the ridell revolution helmate. like go on youtube and type in a revolution helmate ans click on the first thing u see and ittl show u. trust me. this thing is a great helmate but its focused more on comfort vurses stoping cincusions but the revolution has amazing comfort and puts a huge stop to cincusions. like for real. go on youtube and type in a revolution footbal helmate and ull see what im talking about.

No man the Revo’s are pieces of crap. I used a revolution on varsity football this year and got two concussions. My friend, a fellow linebacker, also suffered a concussion using a revolution. I suggest to anyone tryin to find a helmet that protects you to look into the ION or the Xenith. Just giving my opinion but the Revolutions are horrible don’t waste your money on them.

The ION is the cream of the crop. Testing shows it out preforms the Revolution in game type playing conditions. The revolutions uses old foam cushion technology. Game time and practice temperatues inside the helmet are seldom at 75`, more like 100`. The ION smokes the revo at those temps, not even close. From trying to read Todd’s post I think he has been wearing the Revo a little too long.

Why Schutt didn’t get with the visor manufactures to make sure people could put visors on their helmets is beyond me…… Is there one that fits?????

“the most comfortable and most protecting helmat is the ridell revolution helmate”. I used a riddel revolution helmet for the past season. i really liked the helmet untill about 3 weeks after getting it I suffered a severe stage 3 concussion and missed almost 3 weeks of school and cannot play football till next year. I also suffered a concussion last year in a revolution helmet. I would highly recommend the Ion 4d or a Xenith.

okay r there high and low area to buckle ur chrinstrap on the ion or no…….o and which helment is better the ion 4d carbon or the new ion titanuim

The only differance is the facemask, the “Carbon” has a carbon steel facemask, the “Titanium” has a titanium face mask, the carbon is bigger, heavier, and not as strong (but strong enough), but it is also FAR less expensive.

The Schutt company recommends that the ion be used with the chin strap buckled low, but through a special slot on the facemask. This gives u complete field of vision. But, the helmets are dimpled in the high position so if u want 2 buckle high, you can drill the hole and attach the snap. Lots of guys on NFL teams are doing that.

Take a look at the xenith, schutt is strongarming dealers not to carry it…hmm wonder why..competition maybe?

I’ve taken a close look at this helmet and there are many things I don’t like about it.

1. This helmet is very heavy! The facemask construction is crazy! The helmet is also very front heavy because of the facemask! The only way to get around this excessive weight issue is go titanium – but this is CRAZY expensive!!

2. Sizing is a bit strange. I’m a medium and I fit into their large helmet! Does this mean that I’m wearing a large shell when I should be wearing a medium. I don’t like the idea of my head being a bigger target!

3. I don’t buy into the rubber shock absorber – neither from Riddell nor from the Ion! I think it is more of a gimmick. Yes, it will absorb some of the impact energy, but realistically how much? 3% 5%…not more than that! Once the rubber bottoms out, the impact energy is transmitted to the shell. Besides, when you allow this kind of displacement of the facemask, this means that the facemask gets closer to the player’s face during a frontal impact! I’t rather have the foam or Skydex manage the impact energy than have the facemask come closer to my face!!

4. Limited air flow will make this helmet very warm to wear!

5. Finally, this is one ugly helmet.

I’ve been lucky to have seen the Xenith X1 at one of the dealers – and as one of the poster noted, Schutt IS strong arming the dealers to not sell Xenith!! This is a very nice helmet. I did not try on a medium because they didn’t have one available at the time. The large was a bit too big, but it was still very comfortable. I like the way it fits to the head.

I also like their technology. The adaptive nature of their technology seems a very logical thing that one would like to have. Adapting to high and low energies!! Foam and Skydex can’t do this!

The X1 is the helmet that I’m looking to get. It’s a bit pricy – around 350 – but hey, when you buy a Porsche, you pay for a Porsche! That is my philosophy.

Oh, and if any of you have already suffered – even a single concussion – there is no helmet that can guarantee that you won’t get another concussion again! The best prevention is to never get a concussion!

I personally would not go with the ion bcz of its heavy weight. I have a Riddell Revolution Speed and it has worked WONDERS for me. It can hold a visor (Which the ion can’t). A senior at my highschool has an ion. he thinks its comfortable but heavy. I would say to go with a Revo Speed, Xenith X1, or the Ion 4D. GOODLUCK
