The Wash Up 4th November-11th November 2007

– As many of you heard, Curt Schilling has re-signed with the Boston Red Sox. However, this was not a simple contract. Although he is guaranteed $8 million dollars, his incentive structure has ability to earn him a lot more if he can keep his weight at an acceptable level. He will have regular weigh ins to ensure he is keeping a pre-determined weight. This clause could see him net an extra $2 million. [A deal worth Schilling’s weight in gold] Future Sports Agents take note. One of the criteria that will keep you ahead of the game is creativity, and this is a perfect example.

– Football’s Rich List has been released and it’s no surprise that the owners are the ones heading the list. [Owners dominate Football’s Rich List] As you can see by the list, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is on top. Also noted that if one day you want to own your club, you better start saving!

– Flavour of the month Tony Romo’s new contract is worth $67 million, but only $30 million is guaranteed. [Romo’s new contract not as outrageous as it seems] Is this too much?

– A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article on the proposal of a ‘Second NBA’ in China [NBA 2: China] Well, last week’s face-off between Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian would prove that the NBA is on to something. The match between their respective sides drew an audience in China of around 200 million viewers, a staggering number which further demonstrates the growing popularity of basketball in China. $30 million is a nice guarantee. I don’t think it is too much, however. He is getting a large guarantee based on his past performance and his ability to play in the NFL. Jamarcus Russell just received a huge guaranteed contract and has never taken an NFL snap. I’d rather pay the money to someone who has shown he can do it. 8-1 this year is negotiation by example.

i think romo’s contract is awful. it is essentially the same contract as marc bulger, who’s leading the 1-8 rams. who would you rather have as your QB for the next 7 years?

something needs to be done about rookie salaries, it shouldn’t be too hard to get passed via the nflpa either since the nflpa represents current players and not future players who would be affected by any change.

$30m is about right for romo, too much for bulger, and way too much for russell, but that’s the nature of the beast, for now.

demarcus ware will likely get a new deal next year that’ll surpass romo’s.

It’s not really fair to compare Romo and Bulger this year. Bulger has a depleted o-line, including the top left tackle in the game in Orlando Pace. There’s no doubt Romo is having a poor season, but he also is a 2 time pro-bowler and a pro bowl MVP with one of the most consistent passer ratings in the league. Bulger signed his extension after his pro bowl mvp season, so the contract he was awarded coincided with his market value. Also, I believe Romo got a pretty good deal because Jerry Jones wanted to get it done so it wouldn’t be placed on next year’s cap, although I could be wrong there. Demarcus Ware is one of the top outside linebackers in the league when it comes to getting after the QB. I know Joey Porter’s contract was for around $32 million for 5 years, so I would assume Ware to be looking in that range for his as well.

Bulger isn’t a bad QB, but what is a Pro Bowl MVP worth? Nobody playing defense, you’re only allowed to run certain defenses, etc. It’s a week long vaca in Hawaii.

It is an honor to be there and participating in the game, but being an MVP of it is nothing special.

Bulger had one high quality year 2006, Romo last year was as good as Bulger ever was (barring 2006) and was on pace for 2007 to be better than Bulger’s 2006 year.

One of the main reasons Romo got a bad deal is that he had all of the leverage. If the Cowboys didn’t offer him a deal they’d franchise him and he’d make boat loads next year, the Cowboys can’t afford not to have Romo.

Ware’s 5 years younger than Porter and will be in line for a deal closer to what Freeney got six year, $72m and $30m in guarantees.
