7/28/08 News & Notes

I am still in Orlando, hopefully making my way back to South Florida by a reasonable time tonight.  I have a lot to report about this weekend’s AAU National Championship that was held at the Disney Wide World Complex.  Until then, enjoy some posts by our contributors and the News & Notes written by Justin Herzig, below.

Gerard Haran

Gerard did not play over the weekend.  His last game was Thursday when he went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and 1 run.  Without Gerard in the lineup, the Newark Bears were swept by Lancaster Barnstormers.

Robert Lara

Robert Lara had two back-to-back stellar games Friday and Saturday.  Friday he went 2 for 5 with a homerun and 2 RBIs.  On Saturday, he went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles, while also getting 2 walks.

Dan Leatherman

What more must Dan do?  He ended last week recording his 3rd save of the season pitching 2.1 perfect innings, giving up no hits or runs while still striking out 3.  Dan is pitching nothing short of amazing.

Lara looks legit so far. He’s got a VERY nice BB:K ratio and shows pop, all while playing at a premium position. Nice sign right there…hopefully you guys don’t lose him.

Also, he needs to be at Eugene or Fort Wayne and finish off the year. Time for a challenge.

Shane-

We are really excited about Lara’s potential. He was drafted for his defensive skills, but his offense has really exceeded all expectations. The Padres are putting him mostly at cleanup and he has been holding it down.

We hope that Lara finishes the year at a higher level. For now, it looks like he will be staying in Rookie Ball because it allows him to start every day and get some good experience.
