NYU Kicks Off Sports And Society Program With Panel On Ethics And Justice

What: NYU Sports and Society Kickoff Event – Integrity of the Game: Ethics and Today’s Athlete

When: Monday, November 18, 2013 (7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.)

Where: NYU Kimmel Center for University Life – Rosenthal Pavilion (60 Washington Square South, New York, NY)

The event will kick off the new NYU Sports and Society within the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS).  The focus of the panel will be on ethics and justice, and the panelists will assume the roles of key players in the life of a growing athlete.  Issues covered will include age deception, performance enhancement, responsibility of role models, impact on academics, business corruption, and preservation of privacy and health.

Arthur R. Miller, University Professor, NYU School of Law; Director of Public Dialogues at NYU-SCPS; one of the nation’s most distinguished legal scholars in the areas of civil litigation, copyright and unfair competition, and privacy; co-author of Federal Practice and Procedure; former legal editor of ABC’s Good Morning America; Emmy Award-winner for the PBS series “The Constitution: That Delicate Balance”; Commander of the Order of the British Empire (moderator)

• Garland Allen, former Director of Athletics for Greenwich High School (CT) and Ridgewood High School (NJ); former Director of Wellness, Ridgewood NJ Public School System; former advisory board member for Family Counseling Service of Ridgewood NJ; Co-chair for the design and the implementation of Ridgewood Academy of Health Professions; lecturer on building healthy young athletes and on defining the appropriate role of parents in youth sports
• Arthur Caplan, Drs. William F. and Virginia Connolly Mitty Professor and Founding Head of the Division of Bioethics, NYU Langone Medical Center; member of the Special Advisory Committee to the International Olympic Committee on Genetics and Gene Therapy; member of the FIFA Special Advisory Committee on the use of technology in allowing athletes to adapt to altitude and other environmental challenges
• Harry Carson, New York Football Giants former captain and linebacker; Pro Football Hall of Fame member, author, and broadcaster; named to the All-NFL Team seven times, the All-NFC Team eight times, and was NFC Linebacker of the Year twice; CEO and President of Harry Carson Inc., a sports consulting and promotions company; author of two books, Point of Attack (1986) and Captain for Life (2011)
• Mike Francesa, current host of afternoon sports radio talk show heard weekdays on WFAN and simulcast via the YES Network, and host of The NFL Now, which airs on Sundays; former host of Mike and the Mad Dog radio program, which was widely recognized as the most celebrated sports radio program ever; two-time winner of the Marconi Award; ranked as the No.1 sports talk show host in the country by Talkers Magazine and Radio Ink
• Steve Greenberg, Managing Director, Allen & Company; has represented owners in the purchase and the sale of major league sports teams; involved in formation of the NY Mets’ regional sports network (SNY) and Mets Citi Field naming rights deal, the formation of a regional network in Chicago (Comcast SportsNet Chicago), the creation of a Big Ten Cable Network in partnership with Fox Sports, and the formation of the MLB Network
• Robert D. Manfred, Jr., Chief Operating Officer, Major League Baseball, reporting directly to the Commissioner and overseeing all of the traditional functions of the Commissioner’s Office, including labor relations, baseball operations, finance, administration, and club governance; previously served as Executive Vice President for Economic and League Affairs, responsible for labor relations and human resources as well as the relationship between the clubs and the Major League Baseball Players Association, in addition to the human resources functions of the Commissioner’s Office; former partner in the Labor and Employment Law Section of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP in its Washington, D.C., office
• Tony Ponturo, Partner, Kirmser Ponturo Group LLC; Director, AVP, Inc.; former Vice President of Global Media and Sports Marketing of Anheuser-Busch Inc.; and former President and CEO of Busch Media Group; trustee of American Film Institute (AFI); board member New York City Center, Sheldon Hall, Channel 9 (PBS), and Opera Theater in St. Louis; ranked No. 14 among Businessweek’s list of the 100 most prominent sports executives
• Brendan Shanahan, NHL Senior VP of Player Safety and Hockey Operations, focusing on making the game safer for its athletes through rule changes, education, equipment, and playing environment as well as supplemental discipline; former VP of Hockey Operations and Business Development; 21-year NHL playing career during which he amassed 2,489 penalty minutes and 656 career goals (11th in League history), playing for the New Jersey Devils, the St. Louis Blues, the Hartford Whalers, the Detroit Red Wings (won three Stanley Cups), and the New York Rangers; winner of Olympic and World Championship gold medals for Canada, Shanahan became one of only 25 members of the Triple-Gold Club.
• Kiki VanDeweghe, NBA Senior Vice President of Operations, overseeing development of playing rules and interpretations, game analytics, disciplinary matters, and policies and procedures relating to the operation of NBA games; previously, served as the General Manager, and for one season the interim Head Coach, of the New Jersey Nets from 2007 to 2010; from 2001 to 2006, served as the General Manager of the Denver Nuggets; NBA playing career spanned 13 years, with the Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, New York Knicks, and Clippers, during which he averaged 19.7 points per game with a 52.5% field goal average, 87.2% free throw average, made two All-Star appearances, and helped his teams to the postseason 12 times.
• Lesley Visser, journalist, CBS Sports and News; writes for CBSSports.com and also is part of WFTL 640 Fox Sports’ morning drive in South Florida; only woman who has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; first female NFL analyst on TV, and the only sportscaster in history who has worked on Final Four, NBA Finals, World Series, Triple Crown, Monday Night Football, the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Figure Skating Championships, and the U.S. Open network broadcasts
