Former Georgetown MBB Coach John Thompson III Signs With The Montag Group

Former Georgetown University head men’s basketball coach John Thompson III has signed with Sandy Montag and The Montag Group for his representation in his burgeoning broadcasting career.

Thompson III was relieved of his coaching duties by the Hoyas in March after 13 years at the helm. However, he had been around the program for much longer as his father is John Thompson, Jr. the famed Georgetown head coach who led the Hoyas from 1972-99. The younger Thompson took over in 2004.

While the Hoyas achieved some success on the court during JTIII’s career, including eight trips to the NCAA Tournament including a Final Four appearance in 2006-07, but they could never quite get over the hump and return to the old school style of Hoyas basketball the Hilltop experienced during his father’s tenure.

At The Montag Group, Thompson III will be represented by Sandy Montag himself. The former WME-IMG agent left the conglomerate in September to start The Montag Group, which represents top coaches, broadcasters, speakers and authors. Some of his clients include John Madden, Bob Costas, Scott Van Pelt and Dick Vitale.

“John is really interested in getting into broadcasting, whether it be as a game analyst or studio analyst,” said Montag. “We really feel he has a lot of upside. He’s well-spoken, thoughtful, a smart guy. We think there are a lot of avenues available to him as a broadcaster. In the next several months we will be talking to every network that has basketball, whether it be college or NBA.”

As someone who has spent nearly his whole life around the game, Thompson III is very knowledgable when it comes to the game. He has had a radio show for a number of years and has appeared in various commercial spots throughout his career. Prior to his signing with The Montag Group, he was not represented for broadcasting.
