Description
The National Baseball Arbitration Competition is a simulated salary arbitration competition modeled closely on the procedures used by Major League Baseball (MLB). Like most law school moot court competitions, the National Baseball Arbitration Competition’s main goal is to provide participants with the opportunity to sharpen their oral and written advocacy skills. However, the competition is unique in that it allows law students to sharpen these skills within the specialized context of MLB’s salary arbitration proceedings. Additionally, at the conclusion of the arbitration competition the Sports Law Society hosts a panel of experts to discuss legal issues related to baseball.
2014 Judges and Speakers included: John D’Angelo (Manager, Salary & Contract Administration at MLB), Jay Franklin (MLBPA Agent at BBI Sports Group), Jay Reisinger (Partner at Farrell & Reisinger, LLC), and Nona Lee (Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the Arizona Diamondbacks), just to name a few. Last year’s finalists were law students from Emory (champions), Chicago-Kent (runner-ups), Indiana and Miami (semifinalists).
This competition is so notable that ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick covered it: Jerry Crasnick’s TNBAC Story. Alexandra Triana (Co-Coordinator of the 2015 Tulane National Baseball Arbitration Competition) said, “The National Baseball Arbitration competition gives law students the unique opportunity to sharpen their oral and written advocacy skills within the specialized context of MLB’s salary arbitration proceedings. This competition is the only one of its kind in the United States and serves as a legal recruitment platform for Major League Baseball and various sports agencies across the United States.”
