Some UFL Open Tryouts

There are more agents than there are players in the NFL.  New entrants into the industry are lucky to represent a player with a chance of being selected between rounds 5-7.  Many agents will represent players hoping that they will be signed as free-agents after the draft and get a chance to make it to their professional team after being on its Practice Squad.  Many players won’t even get the shot of being on the Practice Squad.

So what to do if you have one of those guys who you paid to have train at a top-notch facility only to get passed over by team after team?  NFL Europe no longer exists, but the CFL may be an option.  Arena Football may also be an option, considering it is making a valiant effort to re-gain its stature as an alternative league to the NFL.  Coming into its second official season is also the United Football League (UFL), which has been making a strong push as of late to induce the NFL into investing in the league and embracing it as a feeder system.

The UFL tends to favor players who make it to Training Camp with an NFL team before being cut, but there is another way to potentially be seen by a UFL team looking to add talent: Open Tryouts.  Be warned, it is extremely difficult for a client to win a job through an open tryout, no matter what league or sport we are talking about.  In fact, in other sports, like certain domestic ‘minor basketball leagues’, teams see these open tryouts as little more than a way to make some additional income by charging players to attend and perform at the tryouts.

But some players will go out to UFL tryouts, and undoubtedly, there will be players who impress team executives and end up getting picked up going into season number 2.  So here are the current details regarding those open tryouts:

  • Las Vegas Locos – April 17 (Phoenix, AZ), May 9 (Los Angeles, CA), May 15 (Las Vegas, NV)
  • Florida Tuskers – May 8 (Miami, FL), May 15 (Orlando, FL), June 26 (Atlanta, GA)
  • Hartford Colonials – May 8 (Petersburg, VA)

No word yet on the Sacramento team’s plans regarding open tryouts.  I will let you all know of updates as I hear them.
